ON VIEW FROM SEPTEMBER 4TH

Large Format Additive Manufacturing

The exhibition Large-Scale Industrial 3D Printing takes you into the world of large-format 3D printing using industrial robotic arms. It features work by the Haarlem-based studio More Than Layers and the concrete printing startup Neolithic, also based in Haarlem. The 3D-printed (design) objects on display are made with the same robots that are typically used to assemble cars on factory floors. From furniture and design pieces to industrial applications and architectural components — discover the future of making.

What is 3D printing?

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a production technique in which objects are created layer by layer from a digital design. Instead of removing material (as in milling or cutting), 3D printing builds an object by adding material, often plastic, metal, or concrete.

With this method, it’s possible to produce complex shapes, customized products, and prototypes quickly and efficiently. From medical implants and car parts to art and architecture, 3D printing is transforming how we design, make, and build.

How does 3D printing work?

design

3D printing starts with a digital 3D model, usually designed in computer software. This model is then sliced into hundreds or thousands of thin horizontal layers.

layer

A 3D printer reads this sliced file and builds the object layer by layer, by depositing or hardening material exactly where it’s needed. Depending on the type of printer and material, this can be done using melted plastic, liquid resin, powdered metal, or even concrete.

result

The result is a physical object that precisely matches the digital design, often made in one go without the need for molds, cutting, or assembly.

3D-Print Gallery in the Koepel

Located in one of the former prison cells of the iconic Koepel (Dome) in Haarlem, the 3D-Print Gallery offers a unique glimpse into the world of 3D printing. From September 4, visitors can explore rotating exhibitions that highlight the creative and technological possibilities of 3D printing,  from design pieces and architecture to industrial innovation.

Discover how digital ideas become tangible objects in this compact but inspiring space in the Koepel.
